Notes
U.S. Scott #1 Five Cent Franklin on cover. The stamp is bright and has four visible margins. The stamp is tied to a red CDS (Boston 3 May) [1848]. Red circular cancellation with vertical lines is well centered, allowing a good look at Franklin. The letter, on pale blue paper, has been stored for many years, folded so the stamp was not exposed to light - the stamp remains quite vibrant. Please see the photos.
It is addressed to Saco, Me., Atty, Moses Emery about a collection matter. Apparently Emery represented the debtor and appealed for relief or at least sympathy. The letter, in response to Emery's is a bit sardonic and not sympathetic in the slightest.
