He left the Paid notation, but crossed off the box number, so that he would not be charged again for the postage.

Full even margins, deep shade and detailed impression, cancelled by blue grid, matching STEAM-BOAT in scroll handstamp on folded letter datelined Detroit Feb. 20, 1847 and addressed to Buffalo N.Y., manuscript charge box number notation at lower left crossed out and marked Paid, faint vertical file fold well away from stamp
EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED USE OF THE BUFFALO STEAM-BOAT FANCY MARKING. A GORGEOUS COVER.
According to the Alexander book, this marking was applied at Buffalo to non-contract steamboat or ship mail. In this case, the sender applied the stamp to what was originally intended to be a stampless cover with a box-charge notation. After affixing the stamp, he crossed out the number and wrote Paid.
