1847, 10¢ black, diagonal bisect (Scott No. 2a). Lower right half with large margins, well tied by enormous manuscript. "X" on folded cover to New York with bold blue "Lake Champlain S.B. Nov. 2" c.d.s., matching "Paid" and "5" equally well struck, cover with a few minor toned spots at lower left, Very Fine, an eye-catching usage; Illustrated in Alexander, p.808. Letter addressed to William Holt Starr (1808-1884), lamp manufacturer (with Charles H. Fellows) at 67 Beekman Street and publisher at 122 Nassau Street (Farmer & Mechanic with John Alburtis, 1849 Doggett’s). He was also president and manager of the Starr Coal and Iron Company in Pennsylvania. He later relocated to New London, Conn. and served in the Connecticut State Legislature (both House and Senate) and served as Alderman and Commissioner of Charities in New London.
