IT IS A GENUINE USE, THE FOLDED LETTER WITH A FILE FOLD AFFECTING THE STAMP

An examination of the cds clearly shows a DE27 1849 Montreal L.C. receiving mark superimposed on the Hudson River Mail cds. The Canadian marking is slanted downward about 45 degrees. Mentally removing that marking is relatively easy and the Hudson River NY cds is clearly DEC 20, not 18.
Reverse endorsed 1849/Daniel Torrance/New York 18th Dec.
Quebec L.C. DEC 29 receiving mark on reverse.
There are 5 different dates on this cover. Three auction houses and the PF (twice) examined this cover and no one dated it correctly.
1. Dec 18, 1849 on 1st page dateline and reverse endorsement. The PF and Americana both used this for the mailing date.
2. Dec 19 (1849) on the 2nd page dateline, which is clearly a follow-up letter written the next day, prior to mailing, and refutes the Dec 18th mailing date. Ignored by everyone.
3. Dec 20, 1849 is the date of the Hudson River Mail cds. Siegel sale 771 may have intended to use this date and their 12/29 date may have been a typo.
4. Dec 27, 1849 receiving mark in Montreal
5. Dec 29, 1849 receiving mark in Quebec and the mailing date provided by Siegel sale 771.
