The lot description of the 2/1/48 cover (ID 14210) in the Robert A. Siegel sale 1211 (William H. Gross lot 46) claims that this listing is a duplicate of the 2/1/48 cover with an incorrect date.
I will remind users of this census that ALL covers without illustration come from Thomas Alexander's 2001 volume The 1847 Issue: A Cover Census. In this case, this cover is listed on page 799.
To date, 374 duplicate listings have been removed in this online version of the census.
The general procedure in the case of a suspected duplicate is to research the sources given in Thomas Alexander's notes in the APRL. I am only about halfway through this process. Until a cover listing is proven to be a duplicate, it will remain in the census. This was an early choice - it is better to have a duplicate listing than a case of omission. (the editor).
As an aside note, the 1 on the 2/1/48 cover is tilted ccw from the vertical and I can understand that someone may have described this as a 7. However, it is centerred under the E so misreading the date as 27 seems unlikely. Still, I may be able to identifiy this as a duplicate when I get to the 5c Virginia covers in Alexander's notes.
