The Alexandria post office disregarded the stamp on this letter mailed in 1853, and rated it 5c due. Such action was the rare exception rather than the rule.
Lot 347 5c Brown (1) mostly large margins, uncanceled, applied by red wax seal to March 1853 folded letter to Baltimore, black Alexandria Va cds and matching 5 for unpaid rate, stamp creased and with an overall rose tint from the wax, unique usage, with 1972 note on back from John Birkinbine II stating this cover was found in the Forrest estate.
