1847, 10¢ black (Scott No. 2). Ample to large margins, choice fresh shade and superb impression, tied by twice struck Scarab cancel in red, matching "St. Johnsbury Vt. Apr. 4" c.d.s. on 1849 folded letter to Rochester, N.Y., Very Fine and rare. Estimate $4,000-5,000

The red Scarab from St. Johnsbury VT is typically a very light strike and generally is completely contained on the stamp. Few strikes tie to the cover; unfortunately the postmaster of St. Johnsbury was very careful in his work.
