Notes
Used blue ink only. Its townmark is a large circle, 32 1/2 mm. in diameter, and its killer is a standard 7-bar grid. However, the postmaster sometimes used his grid in such a way, by striking it twice on the stamps at a different angle, that it made a lattice work pattern. Letter to Volney Atwood (1812-1906), one of the first settlers to arrive in Janesville in the 1830s from Vermont. In the 1840s he occupied the position of deputy and sheriff in Rock County before joining William Lawrence in the hardware business. He retired in the early 1900s.
