Based on the endorsement at left, "Cashier, Stark Bank", this letter was sent from George W. Harman. In 1847, the Vermont Legislature passed an act that changed its name from the Green Mountain Bank to the Stark Bank (named for Revolutionary War hero Gen. John Stark, victor of the Battle of Bennington on Aug 16, 1777). The bank opened its doors on Main Street West in 1848 with William S. Southworth as president and George W. Harman as its inaugural cashier.
Carlos Coolidge (1792-1866) was a prominent Whig politician, lawyer, and patent attorney who spent virtually his entire adult life practicing law and politics in Windsor. In the summer of 1848, he was completing his term of office as a State Bank Commissioner in preparation for the Governor election in September.
Coolidge served as Governor of Vermont from October 1, 1848, to October 11, 1850. Because he failed to secure an outright majority of the popular vote in the 1848 and 1849 elections, he was democratically chosen as governor by the state legislature both times. He also served as a Vermont State Senator from 1855 to 1857.
Through his family lineage rooted in early Vermont, Carlos Coolidge was a distant cousin of the 30th U.S. President, Calvin Coolidge.
