Artemas Boies Waldo (1823-1892) was a lawyer and public official who settled in the village of Port Henry, New York. History records him as arriving around 1850. (Caroline Halstead Royce’s "Bessie A. Hanmer's History of Moriah and Warner's History of Port Henry")
The turned letter was sent to Essex County Clerk, Col. Edmund F. Williams (1801-1885), located in Elizabethtown, NY, the Essex County seat where all regional court cases, land deeds, and legal filings had to be recorded. Williams was Essex County Clerk from 1839 to Dec. 31, 1848, confirming the dating of the cover and proving that Waldo was in Port Henry, at least temporarily, as early as 1848.
