1847, 5¢ dark brown (Scott No. 1a). Large margins, early rich color and detailed impression, canceled and tied by elaborate manuscript cross-hatching on 1847 folded letter with "Houston Txs. Dec. 24" c.d.s. in black, to Austin; stamp with small toned spots in top margin, still Very Fine. Illustrated in Alexander, page 761. Estimate $4,000-5,000

Thomas William (Peg Leg) Ward (1807 – 1872) was an Irish-born American soldier and politician who served three nonconsecutive terms as the mayor of Austin, Texas. Ward also served as the 3rd Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office and United States consul to Panama. He lost his right leg during an assault on San Antonio as a volunteer member of the New Orleans Greys in the Texas War of Independence in 1835 and his right arm during a cannon mishap during the Texas Independence Day celebration is 1840.
Professionally, he was a lawyer, served briefly as postmaster of Houston, chief clerk of the Texas House of Representatives, Mayor of Austin (1840) and Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office (1841-48). He was elected Mayor of Austin in 1853 but resigned in September when President Pierce appointed him as consul to Panama. In 1865, he was again appointed as Mayor of Austin, but left in October to become Corpus Christi’s customs collector, which he retained for 4 years until President Grant fired him.
