10c Black 1847, huge margin at right, other three sides close to full except just into at top right, tied by red Charleston S.C. Apr. 4 10 integral rate datestamp on blue 1848 folded letter datelined New York to New Orleans, matching Steam-boat cancel, per Southerner at bottom left, stamp with light toning in two corners, otherwise Very Fine, 2005 PF certificate
Only four 1847 covers exist from Charleston with the Steamboat marking. The "Southerner" was one of two Steam Packets carrying mail between New York City and Charleston S.C. This cover was carried by the "Southerner" from New York to Charleston, the 10c stamp affixed and canceled there, and then taken onwards to New Orleans Provenance: ex Craveri and Hackmey
