1847 5c red brown, horizontal pair, with part of adjoining stamp at left, margins all around, except barely clear at top, tied by red Charleston, S.C. cds on small cover addressed to a Cadet Benjamin Allston at West Point, backflap refolded through corner of the left stamp, otherwise fine, cat. $1,700

1847 5c Red Brown Pair on Cover to West Point Cadet
1847 5c red brown horizontal pair on small format cover from Charleston, South Carolina, to Cadet Benjamin Allston at West Point, New York. The pair is tied by a red Charleston circular date stamp with top-left corner of left stamp creased by flap folding. Still a very nice 1847 5c pair with margins all around. Benjamin Allston, named after his paternal grandfather, graduated from West Point in 1853. He was the son of Robert F.W. Allston, also a West Point graduate, who would become Governor of South Carolina in 1856. At the start of the Civil War, Benjamin Allston received a commission in the Confederate States Army. Allston was wounded in the Battle of Vicksburg and taken prisoner by Union forces.
