The lot was from a group of 22 5c 1847 covers from a new original find, all sent from Providence, R. I. to New Haven, Conn. The letters have been retained by the owner, who has written the month & year in pencil on the back of each cover. All stamps tied by Red Grid and are arranged chronologically. Some of the stamps apparently from the same sheet.
All of the covers were addressed to Miss Francis in care of Miss Mary Dutton, New Haven Connecticut.
Miss Mary Dutton was the principal at the Grove Hill Female Seminary. Miss Francis was probably Elizabeth Francis, daughter of Rhode Island governor and US Senator John Brown Francis, who had three daughters (Elizabeth, Sally, and Sophia Harrison). At least one of the covers is addressed to Miss E. Francis.
