1 1847 5¢ red brown ON COVER WITH RED GRID & PROVIDENCE, R.I. CDS TO CONNECTICUT
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
It Is A Genuine Usage
Alexander listed as 3/1/50, based on the PF # in his listing of Providence covers (but is really 5/13/50.)
Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc. sale 656 lot 69 realized 325
The green bkg color is a result of pushing the contrast. The date appears to be MAY 13.
More likely an 1851 usage based on the dating of the rest of the correspondence.
Miss Mary Dutton (1807-1887) moved to Cincinnati in 1832 with the family of Rev Lyman Beecher and opened a female seminary there along with Catharine and Harriet Beecher. After Harriet married Professor Stowe, Mary returned to New Haven and purchased the Grove Hill Seminary, which she ran as principal for about 30 years (late 1830’s thru 1865). Her brother was Rev. Samuel William Southmayd Dutton (1814-1866), pastor of the North Church in New Haven.
Miss Francis must have been a student at the seminary. Based on the letter originating in Providence, RI, Miss Francis may have been one of the daughters of Rhode Island governor and US Senator John Brown Francis, who was also chancellor of Brown University. He had three daughters (Elizabeth, Sally, and Sophia Harrison). Cover ID 13402 is addressed to Miss E Francis; indicating Elizabeth was probably the addressee.
