Lot 373 1st-ISSUE 5c ON COVER FROM PROVIDENCE (R.I.) TO AUBURN (NY) ENDORSED "5 DUE" WITH RED "10" RATE-MARK; 12 Mar. 1849 EL from "PROVIDENCE/R.I." (faint red c.d.s. with matching light h.s. "10" on the front) to "Auburn, N.Y." franked by an 1847 5c Red-Brown (4 margins but close at top) tied by a light red Providence barred circle and by the endorsement "5, due" and additionally cancelled in manuscript (as the grid was struck so lightly), as the letter was sent above 300 miles (c.335 miles) and so should have been repaid 10c. There is also a faint red Providence Handstruck "10" alongside the stamp (5c short + 5c fine?). Rare underpaid usage.
