Scott #1 1847 5c Franklin Single On Providence, RI Folded Letter ~ Red Grid & "5" Rate Handstamp (071)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single tied by a distinct red 7-bar circular grid cancel on 1848 dated folded letter sent from Providence, Rhode Island to Wareham, Massachusetts. Accompanying red July 15, Providence, Rhode Island circular date stamp at left along with a perfect strike of a "5" numeral rate handstamp. The cover is in overall extremely fine condition with the stamp showcasing nice margins on all sides to just barely touching frameline at bottom left. The stamp is slightly affected by a light filing fold crease, but it does not adversely affect the overall extremely fine appearance of this 1847 Issue folded letter. 2010 Philatelic Foundation Certificate (PFC)
The 5-cent stamp on this cover pays the rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less sent under 300-miles. This is the perfect item for the Rhode Island or Massachusetts state postal history enthusiast, student of 1847 Issue period markings or collector of great classic U.S. covers.
