1847 5c Orange Brown Franklin Pair Used on Cover from Newport, RI
1847 5c orange brown Franklin horizontal pair used by ultramarine grid cancels on cover to Columbia, Kentucky. Accompanying ultramarine September 19, Newport, Rhode Island circular date stamp cancel at top left. Light toning spots at top of cover & light vertical crease between stamps. Neither takes away from the scarcity of this rare 5c color shade on cover.
Though Newport, RI received 3,500 5c stamps during the 1847 Issue period, less than ten covers are known with 5c stamps from Newport. A very nice example of this rare 5c color shade in a horizontal pair on cover.
