An unusually clear strike of the "U. 5. Express Mail N. York" postmark. The 1847 stamps were demonetized as of July 1, 1851, and no longer valid for postage. This cover mailed August 1, 1851, represents an illegal late use of our first issue of stamps. The postage rate from New York to Boston on this date was only 3c per half ounce.
Lot 340 10c Black (2), margins except just clear in BL corner, tied by red grid, matching US Express Mail NY cds on folded letter to Boston, dated Aug 1, 1847, very fine and attractive demonetized usage, signed Ashbrook.

VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED 1847 ISSUE POST-DEMONETIZATION COVER WITH THE "U.S. EXPRESS MAIL" ROUTE AGENT'S CIRCULAR DATESTAMP. A FRESH AND ATTRACTIVE COVER OF THE GREATEST RARITY.
The recent Alexander census of post-demonetization 1847 covers (Chronicle 174) lists 69 examples, including this sole example of the U.S. Express Mail route agent's marking.
