Notes about this cover:
1. On page 714, Alexander notes that the Petersburg Railroad. the Richmond & Petersburg Railroad, and the Petersburg & Roanoke Railroad agents were issued handstamps but they may have been used interchangeably on the different lines
2. This cover is listed as originating on the Richmond Railroad on 6/27/xx to Cobham, Va, Another listing to Cobham, on 6/17/xx is addressed to Miss Rivis and the note for the 6/27 listing indicates it may duplicate the 6/17/xx listing. Clearly, from the illustration, it does not.
Letter addressed to John Thomson Mason (Jan 6, 1787- April 17, 1850). He was an American lawyer, United States marshal, Secretary of Michigan Territory from 1830 through 1831, land agent, and an important figure in the Texas Revolution. Near the end of his life, he lived in New York City but traveled frequently to Texas and died in Galveston. His father was Stevens Thomson Mason, Senator of Virginia so his travel to Richmond was likely personal.
This letter was mailed in 1848 or 1849.
