Notes
Scott #1 5c Franklin with ms X cancel, not tied, on cover mailed from the Long Island Railroad to Greenport, NY CDS has manuscript DEC 28 date.
Alexander listed as 12/28/xx
Lot 101 5c Brown (1), 4 margins ms cancel on 1849 FL (over ms. Paid), postmarked light cds LI Rail Road/ NY / 5 / (ms) Dec 28 (Towle 12-A-1), Fine and scarce.
John W. Kaufmann sale 79 (Pittsburgh Collection)
PF 104647 #1a black brown, genuine use
Illustrated in the Long Island Postal Historian, Vol. 10, No. 4 Winter 1986, p. 158, figure 1, where the cover is year-dated 1850. This is unlikely as John Clark was elected Sheriff of Suffolk County in Nov of 1849 for a three year term and would still be considered “sheriff elect” in Dec of 1849 but not in Dec 1850. He probably started his term in Jan 1850.
In the article text (The Greenport Post Office in the 19th Century, Part II by J. Fred Rodreguiz), the cover is properly dated 1849 and the author notes the letter was sent by Walter Scudder wherein he recommends D. C. Brush for Deputy Sheriff.
