Ashbrook Special Services cover 188
Photograph 188 illustrates a very beautiful 5¢ 1847 Railroad cover from the Paul Rohloff collection. This is a white envelope with the markings in a bright vermillion. There is no indication of origin or of the year of use, but from the shade and impression of the stamp, I would fix the use as sometime in late 1849 or early 1850., This railroad ran north .from Bridgeport, Conn. to Pittsfield, Mass., a distance of 110 miles. The cover is addressed to Hartford, Conn., which was located on a different railroad. The letter was nailed direct to the Route Agent on this particular Mail Route.
