1 1847 5¢ red brown
SINGLE, BLUE 8 BAR GRID CANCEL, WITH MATCHING BLUE EASTERN R.R. DATESTAMP AT LEFT, ON DATELINED PORTLAND, APRIL 9 1849 FOLDED LETTER TO BOSTON MA.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE COVER WITH SOME SOILING ALONG THE VERTICAL FILE FOLD.
Alexander listed as 4/9/49
Given the exact placement of the cancel on the stamp, one must wonder if the postal clerk precancelled the stamps before placing them on cover. Many Eastern RR stamped covers are not tied.
Reverend Nathaniel Smith Folsom (March 12, 1806 - 1890) was editor of the Christian Register, listed at 22 School Street in the 1849 Boston City Directory. During his life he was a missionary, professor at Western Reserve in Cleveland, Congressional pastor of churches in Francestown NH, Providence RI and Haverhill Ma, editor for 2 years, and then a professor at the Unitarian Theological Seminary in Meadville Pa. before retiring and becoming a private teacher and author.
