Lot 519 5c Red Brown (1). Full margins to just in at top where there is a small tear, double "X" penstroke cancel and tied by blue Western R.R. Sep. 26" circular datestamp with second strike and matching "Paid" handstamp on cover to Miss E. Keeler at 303 W. 21st street address in New York City, with "Pr City Despatch Post" manuscript notation at lower left, Very Fine appearance, a rare use, in a Feb. 2005 article, Gordon Stimmell notes that eight covers were discovered used mostly from Portsmouth with "Care of", "Per" or "Via" the City Despatch Post (a local post at this time under the direction of Mead or Cole), these are the only recorded 1847 Issue covers which are directed to go thru a local post

CDS is from the EASTERN RR. Note the E from the right cds between the R and N from the left one. The top of the A is also visible to the right of the adhesive at 9 o’clock in the left cds.
