Letter to the firm of (Stephen C, & Willard P.) Phillips, (William P.) Goodhue and (Daniel R.) Bowker, shippers and merchants located on Phillip’s Wharf in Salem, Mass. A period advertisement lists them as wholesale dealers in flour, grain, sale, lime, cement, plaster, lumber, sugar, coffee, teas, etc.
Stephen Clarendon Phillips (1801-1857) also served in the US House of Representatives (1834-38) and was Mayor of Salem (1838-42).
William Penniman Goodhue (1807-1894) was also noted as a ship chandler.
Willard Peele Phillips (1825-1901), son of Stephen, is noted for trade between the Philippines and China with Salem, Mass. He helped recruit the 54th Mass Regiment during the Civil War while serving as Collector for Salem. He also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate.
