C. H. Wingate & Co. was a merchant operating in Great Falls, New Hampshire (a village within the town of Somersworth, NH). They sold dry goods, apparel, and general merchandise in the center of Great Falls, NH.
Charles H. Wingate (1815-1859) was a 19th-century New Hampshire local publisher, printer, and merchant. He was the owner and publisher of the Great Falls Transcript, the primary local newspaper for the booming mill town during the late 1840s and early 1850s.
Around 1850, due to a chronic shortage of official U.S. small-denomination coinage, regional merchants frequently issued private paper currency known as "merchant scrip" to facilitate local trade. C. H. Wingate & Co. issued known notes during this era. Today, these notes (such as the 5-cent or 10-cent scrip variants from Great Falls, NH) are highly sought-after artifacts among early American paper currency collectors. A Wingate scrip said "On demand, We promise to pay the bearer FIVE CENTS in Goods or Current Funds when presented in sums of even dollars at our store in Great Falls, N.H."
