Scott #1 1847 5c Franklin Single Used On Cover Carried Onboard Boston & Albany Railroad (247)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single tied by a fancy red cross-hatching grid cancel on 1849 dated folded letter sent from Boston to Wilbraham, Massachusetts. Accompanying red January 24, Boston & Albany R.R. circular date stamp cancel at top left. The stamp exhibits ample margins all around and also a tiny age spot at top left, not detracting from the very fine appearance of the red fancy cancel or the stamp itself. 1847 Issue railroad route agent markings are heavily sought after especially when combined with a stamp tied by an unusual cancel.
The 5c stamp paid the postage for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less traveling under 300-miles. The combined elements of the 5c stamp's fancy cancel and Railroad usage make this the perfect item for the Massachusetts state postal history enthusiast, student of 1847 Issue cancels or collector of great classic U.S. covers.
A Very Nice 1847 Issue Boston & Albany Railroad Folded Letter
