Scott #1a 1847 5c Dark Brown Stamp On Folded Letter ~ Summit, Pennsylvania To Albany, NY ~ 2011 PF Certificate (231)
1847 5c dark brown Franklin (Scott #1a) single tied by a manuscript pencil cancel on 1849 dated folded letter sent from Summit, Cambria County, Pennsylvania to attorney James Dexter at the "office corner of North Pearl & State Street" in Albany, New York. The stamp exhibits a nice dark brown shade and margins all around. The 2011 Philatelic Foundation certificate accompanying this folded letter states "it is a genuine usage, the stamp affected by bleaching to cover and a heavy impression from the pencil tie; the cover with state and rate deleted in pen." A unique and newly discovered piece of 1847 Issue postal history from Summit, Pennsylvania.
This folded letter is part of a recent find of sixteen 1847 Issue covers, all franked with 5c stamps. Offered to the market for the first time! Summit, Pennsylvania did not receive any 5c or 10c 1847 Issue stamps during the period of their use. This is the only known cover bearing an 1847 Issue stamp sent from Summit, PA! The 5-cent stamp on this folded letter pays the rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less sent under 300-miles. This is the perfect item for the Pennsylvania state postal history enthusiast, Summit or Cambria County specialist, student of 1847 Issue cancels or collector of classic U.S. covers.

1a 1847 5¢ dark brown
SINGLE, ON 1849 DOCKETED FOLDED LETTTER TO ALBANY, SUMMIT PA MANUSCRIPT POSTMARK AT TOP CENTER.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE STAMP AFFECTED BY BLEACHING TO COVER AND A HEAVY IMPRESSION FROM THE PENCIL TIE; THE COVER WITH STATE AND RATE DELETED IN PEN.
Note - looking at the first 8 in the year date of the docket, the year is 1848, and not 1849. [Image from EBAY lot (weiszcovers)]
