J & J Stuart (James & Joseph) were importers at 50 Williams Street. George H Stuart is not listed in Doggett’s 1848, 1849 or 1851 NYC directory.
The letter may have been written to George Hay Stuart (1816-1890), an importer in Philadelphia at 13 Bank Street (1850 McElroy) and brother to Joseph Stuart.
