Lot 17. 5c Grayish Brown (1a), four margins, very fine impression, tied by multiple strikes of blue Philada Pa 5 May 221 cds on ca. 1849 white envelope, used in conjunction with G. Carter’s Despatch (2c) black (#36L1) to Lawrenceville NJ, bold strike of Carter’s Paid handstamp in circle, stamp with Despatch carefully lined out in pen rather than the usual ms X and just tied, flap with small paper label with eagle and shield in black on brown; local with small tear at top, 5c with small stain at top left and cover with light waterstains along bottom, Fine appearance, a very rare usage as carter’s ceased operations sometime in the early 1850s. 2000 PF certificate.
