Lot 501 Rare combination of 5¢ 1847 and Philadelphia Carrier Department stamp, Scott 7LB11
5¢ Red Brown (1), huge margins to ample including entire right frameline of adjoining stamp at left, late worn-plate impression, tied by blue grid cancel and matching "Philada. Pa. 5cts. Jun. 9" (1851) integral-rate circular datestamp on folded cover to Pikesville, Maryland, used with U.S.P.O., Philadelphia Pa., 1¢ Gold on Black Glazed (7LB11), not cancelled or tied, but used in the correct three-month period when the 7LB11 stamp was first available and the 1847 was still valid (March to June 1851), approximately ten such combinations known (Lyons census in Penny Post), Very Fine, ex Gibson and Boker.

Alexander's listings are confusing. He lists the Pikesville cover to Morfit as 1/9/xx (it's June) and a 6/9/51 cover to Baltimore with the lower image in his notes in the APRL. These are clearly the same cover. The full image shows the source of part of the confusion. The Pikesville cover was sent to Baltimore County; not the city. The 6/9/51 listing to Baltimore was removed.
Letter to Campbell Morfit (1820-1897), chemist. In 1853 he established a laboratory at Pikesville Arsenal in Maryland where he investigated gun metal, co-authoring a report with James Booth on the subject for the United States Ordnance department.
