IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE 5¢ STAMP IS A SCOTT 1d BROWN ORANGE SHADE

Is the date the 12th or the 2nd? The “1” looks like excess ink in the gap in the date slug.
The internal dateline doesn’t help. Is this April 2, 21 or 27? In any case, the dating of xx/12/51 makes little sense.
Here is the best answer so far: In the CDS, the 1 is false, the 2 is right and there is a 8 to the right of the 2, despite the BIG gap, maiking the mailing date April 28, 1851. This agrees with the internal dateline of April 27, 1851, which just goes to show how difficult it is to date some of these covers.
The Rodewald Brothers, Adolph and Charles, were merchants at 38 New Street in NYC (1848 Doggett’s). They were still in business in 1854, having moved to 20 Beaver Street (1854 Rodes).
