Lot 95 5c dark orange brown, fine impression and deep rich color (the earliest color of this stamp), large margins and extremely fine, tied on large part folded letter by neat blue grid in circle, also tiny ms marking, postmarked in blue Philada, Pa. July 20 (1847), a very early usage. A rarity. Signed Ashbrook

The 1847 edition of Doggett’s New York City directory lists Rev John Clark Brigham (1794-1862) as the correspondence secretary of the American Bible Society at 115 Nassau Street.
Rev. Brigham was married to Maria Elizabeth Evertsen (1811-1864), daughter of Eliza Roosevelt (1786-1826) and Walter Eversten, and a relative of President Theodore Roosevelt.
