Scott #1 1847 5c Franklin Single On Harford, Pennsylvania Cover ~ Only Recorded 1847 Issue Cover From Harford (124)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single canceled by a manuscript pen cancel on cover sent from Harford, Pennsylvania (Susqueh County) to New York City. Accompanying manuscript March 21, Harford, Pa postmark at left and "Paid 5" at top right. The cover is in overall very fine condition with the stamp having large to ample margins on three sides but cut in at bottom.

Presently, 1,422 5c 1847 Issue covers are recorded sent from Pennsylvania cities and towns. Of this group, 1,240 are from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, leaving just 182 5c 1847 Issue covers sent from all other Pennsylvania towns.
Considering the number of towns and population of Pennsylvania in the mid-19th century, this is an incredibly limited number of covers from small PA towns. The cover offered here is the only known 1847 Issue stamp of either denomination used on cover from Harford, Pennsylvania. No doubt in part due to the fact that Harford did not officially receive any 1847 stamps of either denomination throughout the issue's use.
