Lot 7002 1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott 1), lightly colored example with three margins (in at left) bearing two light strikes of red circular grid cancel, on folded address sheet (docketed Oct. 27/48) to Philadelphia with red "Easton/Oct. 21[/PA]" postmark at left and numeral "5" handstamp at right; vertical file folds well clear of stamp; stamp with horizontal pre-printing fold at center right, Fine to Very Fine.

The 1848 edition of McElroy’s lists Wetherill & Brother as druggists at 65 N Front Street in Philadelphia. Also listed at that address are John Price Wetherill, Sr. (1794-1853) and William Price Wetherill, M.D (1804-1872). William was the "Brother" in the firm. He and his brother John inherited and expanded the drug store and white lead factory originally built by their father and grandfather. Under their joint direction, it grew into one of the largest chemical empires in 19th-century Philadelphia.
