1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott No. 1). Two singles still attached at top, rich deep shade and superb impression, tied by bold pen strokes on 1848 folded letter from Louisville to New York with bold red "STEAM" straightline and matching "Cincinnati 10 Aug. 16" c.d.s.; lettersheet with natural paper bend which passes under left stamp, Very Fine and rare, attractive usage. Illustrated in Alexander, p. 557. Estimate $1,500-2,000

The 1848 edition of Doggett’s lists Montague M. Hendricks (1811-1884) and Henry Hendricks (1804-1861) as dealers in copper at 77 Broad Street and 39 South William Street in NYC.
The business was founded by Harmon Hendricks (1771-1838), who began a mercantile trade in the late 18th century and later acquired the Soho Copper Works in Belleville, NJ. This made the Hendricks family a significant name in the American copper industry. Montague M. Hendricks became a partner in the family firm in March 1841, following the death of his brother Washington (1807-1841). He was actively involved in the business throughout the 1850s and remained a partner until his retirement in March 1869.
