Letter addressed to “Canal Appraiser”. Hoffman’s 1844 Albany City Directory lists Chester Hayden, Ambrose Salisbury, and David Hamilton as Canal Appraisers working for the Executive Department of Albany’s city government. Their responsibility was to assess damage to lands adjacent to the state canals owned by private persons when their lands were appropriated temporarily or permanently for repairs or enlargement of the Erie Canal and for construction of the Barge Canal system. They were employed by the Government in Albany from 1835 through 1953.
