Notes
May 1851 cover from Sommerville NY to Houseville NY. Lightened red grid cancellation and fancy pen cancel. Fraudulently used. Manuscript town postmark. This is the only recorded 1847 cover from Somerville.
Gordon Eubanks exhibit
Alexander listed as 5/1/51
Robert A. Siegel sale 1230 lot 1148 realized 600 (image)
PF 337214
1 1847 5 red brown
SINGLE, FANCY PEN CANCEL, ON COVER TO HOUSEVILLE, NY, SOMERVILLE, NY MANUSCRIPT PMK AT RIGHT.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
It Is A Genuine Usage, The Stamp With A LIGHTENED RED GRID CANCELLATION, AND WAS PROBABLY ILLEGALLY REUSED.
One does not usually write 1th in a date (instead of 1st) so this cover may be dated 5/6/51. The upper cross bar of the 5 in 1851 is displaced to the right, making the 1 look like a 7 but an 1857 mailing is very unlikely.
