1847, 10¢ black (Scott No. 2). Ample to large margins, each Roman numeral "X" neatly struck out in pen , tied by red grids , matching "Potsdam N.Y. Feb. 8" c.d.s. on monumental 10¼" x 8½" Valentine envelope to nearby West Potsdam paying a double rate, ornate all-over design in bronze on gray including flaps, accompanied by a Mansell multicolor enclosure with beautiful lace design with ribbon and hand-written verse inside; bottom flap missing, still Very Fine. Estimate $20,000-30,000

Provenance: Diamant, Matthies, Paliafito.
Considered one of the showpieces of 1847 philately, Lester Brookman chose this item to begin his chapter on the 10¢ 1847 issue in his book, "The United States Postage Stamps of the 19th Century". In the caption of the photo he stated that the cover "may well be the most attractive 1847 cover in existence".
This is the only recorded 10¢ cover from Potsdam (only 100 10¢ stamps were received). Coincidentally, there is a 5¢ pair known from Potsdam on a large Valentine envelope from another correspondence which also has the numerals struck out in pen.
