1847, 10¢ black (Scott 2), spectacular top quality example neatly tied on 1848 folded letter to Reading, Pa by bold New York square grid cancellation, with adjacent red "New York, Oct 3" cds, the stamp is a wonderful large margined example that includes part of the next stamp at top, sharp clear impression, an extraordinary top quality stamp on an attractive folded letter, Extremely Fine, 1977 P.F. cert. ¨Scott $1,550.

PF 63455 #2 genuine use on 1848 folded letter
Cancel double struck. Date appears to be 10/3. The NYC 3 has a horizontal top bar that makes it look like a 5. The double strike makes this pretty hard to determine but there are two key indicators that this is really a 3:
1. A small gap on the left just where the short vertical bar would meet the lower loop and
2. The fine diagonal line from the right of the top bar to the left top of the lower loop
The double strike also elongates the short vertical bar on the left that is attached to the top horizontal bar but not to the lower loop. The NYC 3 has a serif on the upper left.
Scott Wieduwilt at Schuyler Rumsey Inc. informed me that the internal dateline in this cover is Oct 3, 1848.
