Lot 375 VERY EARLY 1st-ISSUE 10c BLACK ON COVER TO LOUISIANA WITH N.Y. "5 cts" C.D.S. STRUCK IN ERROR; 15/16 July 1847 EL (slight edge toning; authenticated by Ashbrook with his h.s. on reverse) from "New York" to "New Orleans, Louisiana" franked for the 300+ miles rate by an 1847 10c Black (close to huge margins - marginal at right - but just touched at top right) tied by a very fine red New York barred diamond cancel and part of the frame of the adjacent matching "NEW-YORK/16/JUL/5cts" c.d.s. (with the "5" crossed through with distinctive blue NY P.O. manuscript), also having a smudged strike of the similar "NEW-YORK/16/JUL/10cts" c.d.s. nearby to replace the "5cts" c.d.s. that was struck in error. This was annotated by Ashbrook as being the "3rd Earliest known use" in 1950, and the 2001 census shows only five earlier 10c covers. This is a remarkable (and unique?) 1st-month usage of the 1st-Issue 10c on cover. Exhibition Item. PHOTO - see page 19 £650
