From the Thomas J Alexander Papers in the APRL
Alexander listed as 11/21/xx
Letter addressed to Margaret Cook Durbin (1830-1886), daughter of Rev. Dr. John Price Durbin (1800-1876) and Frances Budd Cook (1796-1836). She married Fletcher Harper Jr. (1828-1890) in 1849 and had a daughter, Margaret Durbin Harper (1850-1937), who married Hiram Watson Sibley (1845-1932) of Rochester, NY. (Son of Hiram Sibley, inventor of the Sibley tent and one of the founders of Western Union.)
Rev J. P. Cook was President of Dickinson College from 1835 to 1844. He also served as Chaplain of the Senate (1831) and editor of the Christian Advocate (1832). After retiring from Dickinson College, he returned to the ministry and preached at the Union Methodist Church in Philadelphia and served as secretary of the Missionary Society until 1872.
The 1850 and 1851 editions of McElroy’s lists Rev J P Durbin at 491 Mulberry. In 1849 he is listed at 99 N 8th Street. In 1847 and 1848 he is listed at 9 N 7th Street. Thus, this cover was mailed in 1849.
Mulberry Street was officially renamed Arch Street in 1854 but the new name was used before then. For example, the Fifth Presbyterian Church was dissolved and reorganized in 1850 as the Arch Street Presbyterian Church.
