Allen Granberry Thurman (1813-1895) was a lawyer in Chillicothe, elected to a single term in the House of Representatives in 1844, Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, US Senator (1869-1881), President pro tempore of the Senate (1879-1880), candidate for President in 1880 and 1884, and Vice President candidate in 1888 with Grover Cleveland (unsuccessful 2nd continuous term). He returned to Chillicothe in 1847 to practice law until 1856 when he was elected to the Ohio Supreme Court and then continued to practice law there following his term as Justice.
