George Hay Stuart (1816-1890) was an importer located at 6 and 8 Church Street in Philadelphia (1848 McElroy’s). He was a banker, dry goods wholesaler, Chairman of the central committee of the YMCA, Chairman of the United States Christian Commission during the Civil War, and, in 1869 Stuart accepted an appointment to the Board of Indian Commissioners where, as purchasing agent, he fought corruption. He published his autobiography in 1890.
