Notes
Lot 357 5c Brown (1), four margins, tied by red square grid, matching New York Feb 14 circular date stamp on folded cover with clear red Rathbun’s Hotel New York circular handstamp, very fine. Ex. Waterhouse, Dick.
Robert G Kaufmann sale 61 (Elite)
Alexander listed as 2/14/xx but with 2 stamps. (There is no evidence that another stamp was on this cover). Alexander’s notes in his 2001 book mentions the Rathbun handstamp.
A check of Robert A Siegel sale 204 does not show or describe this cover.
The 1849 edition of McElroy’s Philadelphia City Directory lists Henry H Paul as the publisher of the Weekly Galaxy. He is not listed in the 1847, 1848, 1850 or 1851 editions. A newspaper article (unknown name, date) has an article about Henry Paul’s Weekly Galaxy which it describes as a comic magazine. Other articles on the page seem to be reprints from other papers across the country are dated late 1847 and early 1848.
There appears to be no association of Mr. Paul with the Globe in Philadelphia. Also, the 1849 edition of McElroy’s does not list the Globe under daily or weekly newspapers.
