Scott #1 1847 5c Franklin Stamp On 1851 Folded Letter ~ New York City To Mohawk, NY (174)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single tied by red grid cancel on 1851 dated folded letter sent from New York City to Mohawk, New York. Accompanying red June 22, New York circular date stamp cancel at top center. The stamp has ample to large margins all around and is slightly affected by cover file fold. Still overall a very fine and desirable piece of 1847 Issue postal history that would have cost the sender 40% less just nine days after this letter was sent when the 1847 Issue stamps were demonetized and the domestic rate dropped to 3-cents.

1c 1847 5¢ red orange SINGLE, RED SQUARE GRID CANCEL, ON 1851 DATED FOLDED LETTER TO MOHAWK NY, RED NEW YORK PMK AT TOP CENTER.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE STAMP WITH A SMALL CORNER CREASE AT TOP LEFT, A SMALL TEAR AT LOWER RIGHT AND GUM SOAKS, WAS LIFTED AND INACCURATELY PLACED BACK
