Notes
Lot 75 #1, 5c Red Brown, large to very large margins, tied by red square grid cancel on 1851 cover to Middletown, Conn., matching New York Apr 4 pmk, cover with minor edge wear, stamp with crease, otherwise very fine. Est. 500-600
Sotheby’s sale S59
Alexander listed as 4/4/51
The handwriting of the docketing on the left matches other covers addressed to Melville E. Mead in Middletown Conn and sent from NYC, although the docketed number of 3 may be much larger (image cropped, 4/17/50 cover is numbered 47). The ‘Package Three’ marking is not concurrent with the cover mailing and may refer to the storage of these covers sometime during the past 160+ years
Melville Mead was a student at Wesleyan University, class of 1852.
An analysis of the covers in this correspondence indicates that the docketing numbers are not chronological.
