Scott #1 1847 5c Franklin Single On Folded Letter ~ New York City To Albany (224)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single nicely tied by a red square grid cancel on 1850 dated folded letter sent from New York City to attorney James Dexter at the "office corner of North Pearl and State Street" in Albany, New York. Matching red December 12, New York circular date stamp cancel at right. The stamp exhibits a nice color and margins all around. A portion of the adjoining 5c stamp can be seen at right. Clearly the sender initially believed that the letter weighed over 1/2-ounce requiring 10-cents in postage and discovered before sending that it was indeed under 1/2-ounce requiring only a single 5c stamp - Intriguing! A very fine and newly discovered piece of 1847 Issue postal history.
This cover is part of a recent find of sixteen 1847 Issue covers, all franked with 5c stamps. Offered to the market for the first time! The 5-cent stamp on this cover pays the rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less sent under 300-miles. This is the perfect item for the New York state postal history enthusiast, New York City specialist, student of 1847 Issue cancels or collector of classic U.S. covers.
