Stolow sale April 29, 1981
Fox sale May 15, 1961 lot 89
From The Thomas J Alexander Papers in the APRL
Alexander listed as 7/25/50 but notes cover may have been mailed in JUN.
PF 99453 #1, genuine use
CDS shows no evidence of lower bar in ‘L” and slight evidence of upper diagonal line in “N” as well as part of the right vertical stroke in N at bottom. There is some evidence of double striking and overinking in NEW YORK. Cover was most likely mailed in June.
Cover addressed to the law firm of Alexander Samuel Diven (1809-96), Samuel Gilbert Hathaway Jr. (1810-1864), and James Lawrence Woods (1819-1903) in Elmira, NY.
Alexander Diven was a NY State Senator (1858-59), a “free-soil” candidate for NY Governor in 1860, a us congressman from the 27th District (1860-62) which he resigned to join a Volunteer regiment in the Civil War and rose to the rank of breveted brigadier-general.
Samuel Hathaway was an attorney and NY State Assemblyman (1842-43). He served as a staff soldier for his father, General Hathaway sr in 1828 and was given the rank of Colonel. He helped form the 141st NY Volunteers in the Civil War and served as commander of the regiment until he developed heart problems in 1863.
James Woods learned law from his father & grandfather, entered practice with Hiram Gray in 1841 and, when Gray left the practice, joined with Devin and Hathaway in 1846. Woods left the practice in 1865 from failing health. He was married to Susan Van Duzer
