Letter addressed to the law firm of Samuel M Young (1806-1897) and Morrison Remick Waite (1816-1888). The partnership of Yong & Waite started in Maumee in 1839. In 1849 Mr. Waite represented Maumee in the State legislature and, following the expiration of his term in 1850, removed to Toledo to run a branch office of the partnership. Young followed to Toledo in 1852 and the firm continued until Young retired in 1856 to become President of the Bank of Toledo. Morrison’s younger brother, Richard, went to Toledo and partnered with his older brother. This continued until 1874 when Morrison Waite was elevated to become the 7th Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court (1874-1888).
Samuel Young held several other titles in his lifetime, including President of the Branch of the Commercial Bank of Ohio, Adjutant of the Ohio militia, President of the Toledo Coke and Gaslight Company, and Director of the Cleveland & Toledo Railroad Company. He was president and principal stockholder in the Boody House, considered one of the finest hotels around.
